The Great Dungeon Crawl: Mirror Shields Ruling

Last night, a player used a Mirror Shield to reflect a Wand of Disintegration. It worked! It was awesome, but raised some concerns to me as a GM. I wanted to clarify what this means for the future of fighting the Foleks, which have quickly become the party's rivals. There are also some notes about general equipment that should be helpful and should clear up questions.

  1. Attacks using wands or beam spells made at targets wielding Mirror Shields reflect back at the caster on a successful Shield-4 roll; upon a barrage of attacks, the shield must roll against its HT of 12 to see if it requires repairs in town, costing $100. A broken shield cannot reflect any sort of spells.
  2. A Mirror Shield that is too big to be used as a shield which only provides cover (e.g. a 'DB +4' shield or a Pavice shield) automatically deflects the incoming attack, but never hits the caster.
  3. You may buy up the Shield-4 penalty as an Average Technique if you wish, called "Spell Deflection". This doesn't require any special training once you have deflected an attack using a Mirror Shield.
  4. Fine Mirror Shields never roll against HT and always reflect wand attacks or beam spells. Fine Mirror Shields are exceptionally rare specialty equipment and will probably need to get imported from Thaim, where specialist craftsmen make all sorts of strange equipment.
  5. +1 or +2 shields add to the chance of a reflected spell hitting a target.
  6. Dwarven Shields have no special effect against spells who's origin is wands. However, if you ask an elf, they'd probably say that Dwarven shields have a magnetic effect for spells, and then say some frankly deplorable words against dwarves.
