The Great Dungeon Crawl, Session 12: Those Who Seek The Infinite Treasure

September 20th, 1084 Korlai Reckoning.
Recap written by Vic

Characters:
Krusher as "Fleck"
Omegaman as "Kojack"
Vic as "Buckles"
Zomniak as "John"
A Paid Actor off the Street as "Gary"

Fleck, Buckles, Kojack, and John headed out to the dungeon with their “specialist” Gary in tow. On the way there we see about seven orcs riding some spiny kind of large flightless bird-like creatures. They had a banner bearing a copper border with a boring brown backdrop, looked like it was part of a carpet ripped off and put on a pole. When they saw the party, they fled.

"Goblinoid Cavalry" as described by the GM

As the group got there, Gary noticed some monsters in the room at the bottom of the stairs that he heard. John assisted the party in being stealthy—ironically—and they surprised a few goblinoids. There were five well-armored orcs and two hobgoblins, two of whom were surprised.

They quickly surrounded Fleck, who flew into a rage. Buckles tried to roast one with a fireball, but missed. The hobgoblins—shooting quickly—shot at Buckles and John, and Buckles had to drop to the ground to avoid an arrow.

Fleck got hit by two orcs, and one of them hit pretty hard. Kojack followed up with a stab to in the arm, and it dropped its weapon, while John blocked an arrow shot at him (Gary took a mild shot to the arm).

Fleck then brained two orcs in the skulls, dropping them instantly, and the route was on. The orc that Kojack hurt hit Fleck in the skull, but it bounced off. Buckles healed Fleck with the Wand of Major Healing. After that, Kojack stabbed the orc behind Fleck in the heart, running him through, the tip of the polearm coming out his chest. The two hobgoblin archers fled, and Fleck then proceeded to kill the remaining two orcs, hitting them each in the head.

Although Fleck destroyed most of the armor, one of the orcs had a silver collar/tassel of sorts, some sort of Orcish warrior insignia for an Orcish warband. The group followed the tracks of the hobgoblin and found that they went to the teleport room. They forgot the code words, and went back to the “lever room” to read the riddle, “To those who seek their infinite treasure: find the stone of truth.”

As he says “We seek the infinite treasure” in Dwarven, they teleported. Buckles, John, and Kojack felt pretty ill after they teleported, failing Body Sense rolls (facing the south wall prevents this). Fleck opened the door, and saw a javelin come right at him, hitting him and mildly injuring him as he quickly closed the door. The attackers were dwarves with warts, quartz-white skin, coal black hair, and black eyes, wearing “black bronze” armor pieces (copper and silver).

They wore helmets like the above, but black in color

The javelin had dwarven runes on it, and it says “Greenskin Killer” (with black wood that we do not recognize). Buckles cast Flash after opening the door a crack, but the dwarves were gone. They found an illusory wall, and it led to a weird winding passageway that was in between cavern and worked passage. It went down a lot of gradual inclines, and after a while it went up for a while, for a total of 150 yards. It spit the party out at a sold wall.

Buckles focused on the wall, and it “poofed” away, opening out into a hallway going left to right. They followed the tracks to the left, about ten yards or so, and come to a door, down a set of stairs, which smelled like a river, fishy, etc. Gary attempted to open the door, which took him a few minutes, and it opened up into a chasm with a bridge across it. They could hear, from the bottom, rushing water, and it smelled like the outdoors, water, etc.

The bridge—about 14 yards or so—had railings about armpit height for dwarves, with sounds like falling water to the left. On the other side of the bridge is a door, which is where the tracks go. Buckles Levitated himself (with a 3! Free to cast, and maintain), and explored the cavern. To the right, there was a recessed door (accessible only through levitation, flight, or with ropes, Buckles thought).

To the left, there was a waterfall and stream, with some passages along the stream, and he heard another waterfall as well. There was also another waterfall, also with some passages (where he heard shouting). The door across the bridge bore inscriptions on the door with the same black metal as the weapons and armor borne by the black-haired dwarves. The runes, which were in archaic Dwarvish, read, “Doom to those foes who dare to enter.” Gary reluctantly unlocked the door, despite protests. The group explored it a bit, and found a large room behind a door, which is a statue that is depicting four dwarves, and around the statute are four pressure plates, each with a different rune. There is a door on the other side of the room.

The dwarven statues all have different appearances—one wearing cold weather attire, one wearing warm weather attire, one wearing an explorer’s outfit, and one wearing a miner’s outfit. They appeared to be all holding up an invisible bowl or dome. There are inscriptions on the plates, in very old Dwarvish and nearly incomprehensible, named for specific things. Buckles copied them in his notebook. Kojack prayed for a miracle (Gift of Letters), which allowed them to discern that they read, in order, say, “North, East, South, West.”

In the end, the party retraced its steps to the teleport room, but went straight to find Gary’s friends. They found a magical silver ring with a few dead adventurers. With Buckles casting History, the party learned that the other group of adventurers were ambushed by a manta-ray tentacled thing that shot out acid, as well as hobgoblins.

The group took the loot that the dead adventurers had gathered, and also found a Ring of Health. Ultimately, they teleported back to the temple using a Scroll of Divine Intervention, and determined to research and get more information on the various items they had found.

GM's Notes

As I had mentioned in the notes about the Basedstein, we missed a session because of RL stuff. I, of course, haven't learned my lesson. Regardless, it was a fun session and I was glad to be gaming with the group once again. I am not entirely sure what the group is planning next week right now, but I think they are enthralled with the idea of the daises in the dungeon at the moment. Either way, they need to step it up on their treasure game!
